How to Access Medical Cannabis

  1. See a Minnesota health care practitioner about certification.
  2. Have your practitioner certify you for medical cannabis
  3. Register with the Office of Cannabis Management
  4. Download your registry verification from your OCM account. Minnesota does not mail a physical card.
  5. Visit a licensed medical cannabis dispensary

Medical Cannabis Tax Exemption

Registered patients are exempt from both the 15% cannabis tax and Minnesota sales tax when a medical-endorsed business sells cannabis to them. Patients in tribal medical programs and visiting patients are not exempt.

Medical vs. Recreational Cannabis

While Minnesota now allows adult-use (recreational) cannabis, medical cannabis dispensaries continue to serve an important role:

  • Tax exemption: Registered patients are exempt from both the 15% cannabis tax and Minnesota sales tax when a medical-endorsed business sells cannabis to them. Patients in tribal medical programs and visiting patients are not exempt.
  • Registry verification: Minnesota does not mail a physical card. Enrolled patients download a registry verification document.
