Potentially yes. While you're legally allowed to use medical cannabis, landlords can enforce no-smoking policies and may prohibit cannabis use in their rental properties. Federal housing programs must prohibit cannabis use due to federal law. Always review your lease before getting a medical card.

A Minnesota health care practitioner certifies a qualifying medical condition, or a veteran uses the Office of Cannabis Management veteran form. This page does not reprint a diagnosis list. Leafwell says its providers can see patients in under 10 minutes, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. That is Leafwell's scheduling claim, not the state's review clock.

Have the ID ready

After certification, use the link in the Office of Cannabis Management email and check spam. Leafwell says that email can arrive within 3 business days. Upload a government photo ID. If the address on the ID is missing or out of date, the form asks for proof of Minnesota residence.

Submit while the certification is current

Minn. Stat. 342.52 requires a certification dated within 90 days before you submit. OCM asks patients to apply within 60 days because review of a completed application may take up to 30 days.

Up to 30 days

The office must approve or deny enrollment within 30 days after it receives the application and certification. A submission receipt is not approval, and Minnesota does not mail a plastic card.

Enrolled patients get a registry verification in their account. Complete the patient self-evaluation before a medical dispensary visit. Adult-use shops do not require this enrollment if you are 21 or older.

What to have ready for the state application

Certification

The practitioner certification, or the veteran form, has to be part of the application. Statute requires the certification to be dated within 90 days before you submit.

Photo ID

A government photo ID, such as a Minnesota driver's license, state ID, or passport. Leafwell tells patients the registry upload accepts JPG, GIF, TIF, or PNG under 4 MB. Confirm the file rule on the form you are using.

Residence, if the ID address is stale

If the ID does not show a current Minnesota address, the form asks for proof of residence. Leafwell's page lists a current mortgage, lease, or rental agreement; prior-year state tax documents; a utility bill or rent receipt from the previous 90 days; a recent state ID application slip; a recent SSDI, SSI, or insurance benefits statement; or a notarized affidavit. Use the list on the live form.

A parent, legal guardian, or spouse can act as a caregiver without the registered-caregiver application. A registered designated caregiver is a different role: at least 18, and not more than six patients at a time. The caregiver enrollment guide covers that application. People searching for anxiety should read the anxiety guide. Anxiety is not one of the diagnoses named in Minn. Stat. 342.01, subd. 63. A practitioner may still authorize cannabis for a condition. Veterans who use the state form attest to a named diagnosis. That path is on the veterans guide.

What enrolled patients can be dispensed

Minn. Stat. 342.52, subd. 7a, says a registry patient may receive medical cannabis flower and medical cannabinoid products. The office may approve additional delivery methods. Leafwell's Minnesota page still says products are limited to liquid, pill, vapor, flower, or topical form, and that other forms are illegal. Treat that sentence as Leafwell's marketing page, not as the current statute.

After approval, complete the patient self-evaluation in the registry before a medical dispensary visit. Leafwell tells patients to meet a dispensary pharmacist and to bring a photo ID, a medication list, and the certifying visit summary to the first appointment. Insurance does not pay for the cannabis.
