CBD cream in Minnesota: what the label should tell you
A hemp topical and a dispensary cannabis topical are different products under Minnesota law. Here is the practical comparison.
Quick answer
Minnesota hemp-derived topical products may contain CBD or CBG. Other naturally occurring cannabinoids are tightly limited to a combined one milligram per package unless OCM approves another nonintoxicating cannabinoid. OCM cannot approve a tetrahydrocannabinol for this topical pathway.

Hemp cream vs dispensary topical
| Question | Hemp-derived topical | Dispensary cannabis topical |
|---|---|---|
| Primary cannabinoids | CBD and CBG are expressly permitted | May contain cannabis cannabinoids within the approved product category |
| Where sold | No section 342.66 topical license is required | Licensed adult-use or medical cannabis channel |
| Intended use | External application only | Topical or transdermal cannabis product |
| Medical claims | Cannot claim to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent disease | Consumer claims still face labeling and federal limits |

What CBD cream can honestly promise
Consumer CBD creams are not FDA-approved treatments for pain, arthritis, or other diseases. Use product information to compare formulation and labeling, not as a substitute for medical care.
