CBD roll-on vs cream for pain: Is CBD cream better than Voltaren (ask a doctor), side effects, and what 2024 trials did not show. No pain claim.
Quick answer
CBD roll-on for pain is a shopping query, not a result. People want to know whether a roll-on, a cream, or a CBD cooling gel is the container to buy. This page compares formats and labels for adults 21 and older. It does not claim that any CBD topical relieves pain, inflammation, arthritis, or sore muscles. We link isolate roll-ons and a cream from Diamond CBD, a broad spectrum cream from Nothing But Canna, and two cbdMD broad spectrum topicals, all checked or opened on or before October 20, 2026. We do not link THC, Delta-8, THCA, THCP, full spectrum, Delta-9, THCV, or Inferno products.
Compare CBD roll-ons and creams
| Product | Type on its page | Label facts we checked |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 mg CBD muscle and joint roll-on, 3 oz (Biotech CBD, Diamond CBD) | Isolate roll-on | 1,000 mg in 90 ml, 11.11 mg per ml, menthol 3.5 percent, camphor 3.5 percent |
| 2,500 mg CBD pain relief cream, 4 oz (Biotech CBD, Diamond CBD) | Isolate cream | 2,500 mg in 118 ml, about 21.19 mg per ml, menthol 3.5 percent |
| CBD pain cream 3000 mg (Nothing But Canna) | Broad spectrum cream, lavender scent | 3,000 mg broad spectrum CBD per bottle, per the seller's page; named a "pain cream" by the seller |
| cbdMD Freeze roller | Broad spectrum roll-on | 750, 1,500, or 3,000 mg bottles at $44.99, $64.99, $84.99; menthol 4 percent |
| cbdMD Recover pump | Broad spectrum airless-pump cream | Same three strengths and prices as Freeze |
Row order follows what each partner pays the Hub, highest first. It is a commercial order, not a quality ranking. Diamond prices are not printed because sale prices move. Open each link and read the current price, the ship-to state list, and the lot certificate. The Nothing But Canna row uses the seller's product title; this page makes no pain-relief claim for it.
Is CBD cream better than Voltaren?
We cannot say, and this page does not compare their effects. Voltaren is a branded medicine, and CBD creams are not FDA-approved drugs. If you are choosing between them for pain, ask your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you take other medicines. Do not replace a treatment a clinician recommended with a hemp cream because of a retailer page.
What are the side effects of a CBD roll-on?
We found no source that quantifies them. The 2024 chemotherapy neuropathy pilot reported its studied CBD isolate cream as well tolerated, which is one small trial and not a safety approval. The labels we checked list cooling agents and alcohol: menthol and camphor on the Diamond roll-on, and menthol on the cbdMD Freeze. Read the ingredient list, try a small area first, and stop and ask a clinician if your skin reacts. The FDA's list of CBD risks, including liver injury and drug interactions, is mostly about swallowed CBD. Source: FDA consumer update, accessed October 20, 2026.
Can you buy a CBD roll-on in Minnesota stores, or only online?
We did not survey Minnesota stores, so this page does not name a shop. The Hub's CBD cream guide states that no section 342.66 topical license is required for a hemp-derived topical, so availability depends on each retailer. Online, confirm Minnesota shipping at the Diamond CBD checkout, and note that cbdMD ships to the US only. Nothing But Canna describes Twin Cities delivery on eligible products, with eligibility and the delivery area set at its checkout. A dispensary cannabis topical is a separate licensed product, covered below.
Is CBD topical good for pain?
The evidence is limited and mixed. Two small 2024 pilot trials did not show a clear benefit for the creams they studied, and an earlier thumb-arthritis trial reported changes for its own cream. None tested the bottles below.
Brand blogs rank for this query because they repeat a pain claim and then sell the bottle. A publisher can do better by saying what the trials actually did.
In 2024, Pastina and colleagues published a randomized, double-blind pilot in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research. Twenty-eight adults who were not trained for the lower-body workout applied about 100 mg of CBD cream, a placebo cream, or rested. The authors did not find a significant CBD effect on the soreness and performance measures they tracked. PubMed: 38980809.
The same year, D'Andre and colleagues reported a randomized crossover pilot in 40 people with established chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. The studied CBD isolate cream did not beat placebo on the main neuropathy scores. The authors said the pilot did not support a benefit for that painful neuropathy, and that the product was well tolerated in the trial. PubMed: 39016024. "Well tolerated in one pilot" is not a general safety approval. The FDA has not approved over-the-counter CBD creams as drugs.
An earlier thumb-arthritis trial, PubMed 35637038, reported changes in pain and function scores for its own cream. That cream was not a Diamond roll-on. A single small trial does not turn a menthol bottle into a treatment. The honest summary is that the evidence is limited and mixed, and this page will not pick the positive trial and ignore the two 2024 pilots.
Does CBD cream work? For the products in those studies, the 2024 papers did not show a clear effect. For the Diamond bottles below, nobody on this page ran a trial.
What is the difference between a CBD roll-on, cream, and cooling gel?
| Question | Roll-on | Cream | Cooling gel |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you apply it | Roll a ball over a small area | Rub a dab over a wider area | A gel texture, often with a cooling agent |
| Diamond page we checked | 500 mg and 1,000 mg | 2,500 mg cream | No separate gel URL verified on October 20, 2026 |
| CBD on the label | 500 mg or 1,000 mg isolate in 90 ml | 2,500 mg isolate in 118 ml | Use the roll-on label if you wanted cooling |
| Cooling agents listed | Menthol 3.5 percent and camphor 3.5 percent | Menthol 3.5 percent | Menthol on the roll-on is the cooling fact we can cite |
| What we will not say | That it relieves pain | That it relieves pain | That a gel works better |
CBD freeze roll-on is a cousin search. The Biotech roll-ons are the menthol bottles Diamond markets with cooling language. We are citing the active-ingredient line, not the slogan.
Label facts from Diamond CBD Biotech roll-on pages (500 mg and 1,000 mg, 3 oz) and the 2,500 mg cream page. Accessed October 20, 2026. Strength is milligrams of CBD isolate printed on the label, divided by the listed container size. This plate does not claim pain relief.
How do you read the milligrams on a roll-on label?
The 1,000 mg roll-on page lists 90 ml and 11.11 mg per ml. 1,000 divided by 90 is 11.11. The 500 mg bottle is the same 90 ml at 5.56 mg per ml. The 2,500 mg cream lists 118 ml and 21.19 mg per ml. 2,500 divided by 118 is about 21.19. The labels are internally consistent. Consistency is not efficacy.
A higher milligram number means more CBD in the container. It does not tell you how much stays on the skin, how much passes through the skin, or whether you will feel anything beyond the menthol. Menthol feels cool. That sensation is menthol. Do not credit it to CBD unless a study separated the two. The Pastina trial tried to do that with a matched placebo and still did not find a CBD performance effect.
CBD cream for pain and CBD cream versus oil are different jobs. A cream stays on the skin. An oil you swallow is a different product, a different THC question, and a different Minnesota rule. Swallowing questions belong on can CBD make you fail a drug test. Pet oils belong on CBD oil for cats. Do not use a human roll-on on a cat.
What does Minnesota allow a hemp topical to be?
The Hub's CBD cream guide is the state-law page. It cites Minnesota Statutes section 342.66. The short version, as that guide states it: a hemp-derived topical may contain CBD or CBG, and other naturally occurring cannabinoids are tightly limited unless the Office of Cannabis Management approves another nonintoxicating cannabinoid. OCM cannot approve a tetrahydrocannabinol for that topical pathway. Disease claims are not allowed.
A dispensary cannabis topical is a different license and a different product. If you want that channel, start with the dispensary directory, not a hemp roll-on.
Section 342.63 is the label statute the cream guide points to: manufacturer, lab, cannabinoid amounts, ingredients, and the required disclaimer. Read those on the jar. Diamond's pages also carry the standard line that the statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Believe that line. Do not believe a headline that says pain relief and then prints the disclaimer underneath.
What should you look for in the best CBD roll-on?
"Best" on this page means a cleaner label, not a winner. The filter we use:
- CBD isolate, not a THC, Delta-8, THCA, or THCP topical.
- Menthol and camphor listed with percentages if you wanted a cooling feel.
- Total milligrams and container size both printed, so you can do the per-milliliter math.
- A certificate of analysis for that lot that reports no detectable THC.
- No disease claim you have to ignore.
- A ship-to-Minnesota check at checkout.
Between the two roll-ons, the 1,000 mg bottle has twice the CBD of the 500 mg bottle in the same 90 ml. That is a concentration difference. It is not twice the evidence. The cream has more CBD per milliliter than either roll-on and a different ingredient list. The cream page lists water, oils, menthol 3.5 percent, and hemp-derived isolate CBD among a long inactive list. The roll-on adds camphor and alcohol. People who avoid camphor or alcohol should read that list before they buy the cooling format.
The cream category page describes a wide strength range, from a few hundred milligrams to very large jars. We are not linking every jar. We linked the 2,500 mg page we actually opened. If you browse the cream category, check the isolate line and the THC line yourself. Some Diamond brand pages also talk about full spectrum oils. This guide does not recommend those for a shopper who needs no detectable THC.
Is there a CBD cooling gel?
CBD cooling gel has a low competition score in the keyword research and almost no independent page. The useful distinction is texture plus coolant.
A gel is not automatically stronger than a cream. A roll-on is not automatically more precise in a way that changes a medical outcome. Precision here means you can put menthol on a knee without covering your forearm. That is a practical difference when you are dressed for a Minnesota winter and you do not want menthol on your hands.
We did not find a separate Diamond cooling-gel product URL on October 20, 2026 that we were willing to link. The menthol-and-camphor roll-on is the cooling product we could verify. If a gel appears later, apply the same six-step filter. Do not assume the word "gel" means a different cannabinoid.
What we skipped on purpose
Other national CBD brands show up in roundups. The cbdMD bottles below are the exception, and only the two broad spectrum topicals we opened. We also skipped any Diamond product whose name includes THC, Delta-8, THCA, or THCP. A topical can still be the wrong bottle if the cannabinoid is not the isolate or broad spectrum label you meant to buy.
cbdMD freeze roller and recover pump
The freeze product is a roll-on, not a jar. The page checked on October 20, 2026 lists menthol USP natural at 4 percent, and bottle totals of 750 mg, 1,500 mg, and 3,000 mg at $44.99, $64.99, and $84.99. All three were marked available. The page says the batch test looks for no detectable THC. That is a detection-limit statement, not a count of none. Aloe, tea tree, arnica, and yerba mate are on the ingredient list. The seller uses pain-relief marketing. This article does not adopt it. That product page also has an 18+ line. This Hub page is for adults 21 and older.
The recover product is an airless pump, not a roll-on. It uses the same three bottle totals and the same three list prices, and all three were marked available that day. The page names histamine dihydrochloride and calls the feel temporary pain relief. This article does not adopt that claim. It also says the batch test looks for no detectable THC. Coconut, shea, and argan are mentioned in the marketing copy. Confirm them on the ingredient list of the bottle you receive.
The wider shopping page is the cbdMD review. Prices above are the product feed on October 20, 2026, before any coupon, and they move. Neither bottle was in the 2024 trials above.
The Diamond CBD buyer hub explains the redirect. The dog oil guide is the pet path if you reached this page by mistake.
Human pain care is a clinical question. The Hub's cannabis for pain page is about regulated cannabis, not a hemp roll-on recommendation. Read it as a separate topic. Do not stack a roll-on on top of a dispensary product and call it a plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a CBD roll-on different from a CBD cream on the label?
The roll-ons we checked are 3 oz bottles with a ball applicator, CBD isolate, menthol 3.5 percent, and camphor 3.5 percent. The cream we checked is a 4 oz jar of CBD isolate with menthol 3.5 percent and no camphor on that ingredient list. Both are for skin. Neither label is a pain claim.
What did the 2024 topical CBD pilots report?
Pastina's pilot did not find a significant effect of the studied cream on muscle soreness or performance. D'Andre's pilot did not support a benefit of the studied isolate cream for established chemotherapy neuropathy. Both were small. Neither tested Diamond's roll-on.
Is a CBD cooling gel a different drug from a menthol roll-on?
Not on the pages we checked. We did not verify a separate Diamond gel URL. The cooling facts we can cite are menthol 3.5 percent and, on the roll-on, camphor 3.5 percent. The cool feeling is the coolant.
Can a Minnesota hemp topical say it treats pain?
The CBD cream guide cites section 342.66 and the FDA consumer update. Disease claims are not the legal path for these hemp topicals. A disclaimer on the product page does not repair a pain headline. This article does not make one.
If you still want to look

For adults 21 and older. Not medical advice. This page makes no pain-relief claim. No detectable THC on a lab report is not a promise of zero THC.
