Medical cards still offer some benefits, but they're no longer required to purchase cannabis if you're 21+.

Do I Need a Medical Card in 2026?

You DON'T need a medical card if:

  • You're 21+ (can buy recreationally)
  • You're okay with standard purchase limits
  • You don't need tax benefits

You MIGHT want a medical card if:

  • You're 18-20 years old (medical allows access)
  • You want potential tax exemptions (check current law)
  • You need higher purchase limits
  • You want medical documentation for conditions

How to Get a Medical Card in Minnesota

Step 1: Qualify

Minnesota recognizes these qualifying conditions:

  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • PTSD
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Tourette syndrome
  • ALS, Crohn's, terminal illness

Step 2: See a Doctor

Visit a Minnesota-licensed physician who can certify your qualifying condition.

Apply through the MN Office of Cannabis Management website with your doctor's certification.

Step 4: Pay Fee & Wait

$200 annual fee (reduced fees for veterans/Medicaid). Approval takes 1-2 weeks.
