Can Out-of-State Visitors Buy Weed in Minnesota?
Yes.
Any adult 21+ with valid photo ID can purchase recreational cannabis at licensed Minnesota dispensaries — regardless of where you live.
Do NOT Cross State Lines with Cannabis
Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime — even between two legal states. This includes driving from Minnesota into Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota. Consume all purchases within Minnesota.

Payment Methods at Minnesota Dispensaries
This surprises a lot of first-time visitors. Federal banking restrictions create real friction at the register.
Always accepted. Universally available at every MN dispensary. ATMs are on-site at most locations. Plan to bring $60–150 for a typical visit.
Accepted at most dispensaries. Processed as a PIN debit (cash-equivalent) transaction, not a credit card transaction. A small transaction fee ($3–5) is common.
Rarely accepted. Cannabis is federally illegal, so major card networks (Visa, Mastercard) prohibit cannabis merchant accounts. Most dispensaries cannot process credit cards.
Pro tip: Withdraw cash before you head to the dispensary. ATM fees inside dispensaries run $3–6 per withdrawal, and some ATMs have daily limits that may not accommodate a larger purchase.
Consuming Cannabis at Your Hotel or Airbnb
Minnesota law allows cannabis consumption in private residences with the property owner's permission. Here's how that applies to visitors.
Hotels
- Most hotels prohibit smoking — including cannabis smoking — in rooms and on balconies. Violating this triggers smoking fees ($250–500+).
- Edibles and vaporizers are low-odor options that are harder for hotels to detect or prohibit, but technically still subject to hotel policy.
- Cannabis-friendly hotels exist in Minneapolis and Duluth — search specifically for "420-friendly hotel Minnesota" before booking.
- Designated smoking areas at hotels do not necessarily include cannabis — ask explicitly.
Airbnb / VRBO
- Check the house rules. Airbnb allows hosts to set a no-smoking policy. Cannabis is covered under most no-smoking rules even if not explicitly named.
- Filter for "smoking allowed" listings if you plan to smoke — these hosts have opted in.
- Message the host directly before arrival if in doubt. A written confirmation protects you.
- Entire-home rentals with permissive hosts are your best option for legal, comfortable consumption away from home.
